We are delighted to announce the appointment of four research internships, jointly funded by PenARC and the NIHR Clinical Research Network South West Peninsula (CRNSWP). The collaborative programme offers fully-funded internships to health and social care professionals in Cornwall, Devon and South Somerset and is designed as an introduction to research, helping local staff to develop their careers whilst also benefiting the local population and services.
The successful awardees, Fleur Cousins, Naomi Pritchard, Claire Moss and Georgina Marks, whose interests are in the prevention of stroke, end of life care, children’s dental health and children’s mental health will be taking up their placements this month. They will be supported by an academic mentor as they develop their research knowledge and skills through formal training and experiential learning.
We have designed our internship programme to help candidates balance demanding roles and work-life, with each taking place flexibly over a 12 month period, amounting to approximately 30 days.
“I’m so pleased to be working with these four health and care professionals to enable them to gain a better understanding about research that they can then use in their workplace.”
Professor Vicki Goodwin, PenARCs Academic Career Development Lead, who developed the initiative said:
“I’m so pleased to be working with these four health and care professionals to enable them to gain a better understanding about research that they can then use in their workplace. The opportunity may also give them the boost to develop a clinical or practitioner academic career in the future. It is an ideal opportunity for those working in health and social care with no research experience to work as part of a research team and undergo some training and development.”
Dr Pauline McGlone, Deputy Chief Operating Officer, CRN SWP, said: “These roles offer the opportunity for staff to develop their research career pathway and develop key skills with joint support from the ARC and the CRN.”
