Pain, Ageing/Dementia.
My professional background is nursing. I completed my PhD in 2001. Since that time I have focussed on the management of pain particularly with older adults. I have completed a number of major projects in this area, a total of over £3m including; an ESRC project, involving older adults in setting the research agenda, an MRC funded project looking at developing self-management strategies for the management of chronic pain in older adults; a COST collaborative project looking at assessment of pain in those with cognitive impairment and a SBRI project looking at the use of technology for the self-management of pain in older adults (Chatbot). Alongside these major studies I have completed a number of smaller projects in the field of pain and ageing. I have also led the development of the national guidelines for the assessment of pain in older adults (2007, 2018) and the management of pain in older adults (2013, 2020). I am an examiner on the European Diploma in Pain Medicine and I have been a member of the curriculum group developing the European Diploma for Pain Nurses. I am currently working on a pain and frailty programme of research with Bradford dementia group and Kings.
