Date TBC: Using formal theory to assist in structuring review findings: A worked example
Presenter: Sam Redgate, Northumbria University
Formal theories are used in realist approaches to provide abstract concepts. This can aid explanation about how data ‘fits’ together and support generalisation across different contexts. The incorporation of formal theory also assists in the identification of mechanisms and features of context, providing perspective to the developing programme theories.
This session will focus on the role of formal theory in structuring review findings. A realist review which looked to identify mechanisms that promote and support family preservation for children at the edge of care, will be used as a worked example to discuss the potential role of formal theories within realist reviews more broadly.
