Designing & evaluating complex health behaviour change interventions


Adrian has, for over 30 years, developed evidence-based healthy living interventions, and conducted rigorous evaluations and systematic reviews involving specific populations with long-term chronic conditions such as depression, COPD, nicotine and other addictions; obesity, hypertension, diabetes, osteoarthritis, and Parkinson’s disease.

His main focus has been on interventions to support changes in physical activity through face to face counselling or on-line support, and has been chief investigator for randomised trials worth c.£5m funded by the NIHR in the past 10 years. He co-led the NHS guidelines for GP exercise referral schemes in 1990 and has published over 130 peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters. He co-founded in 2008, and remains Editor in Chief of the international journal, Mental Health & Physical Activity. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, BASES and the Royal Society of Public Health.
