The importance of Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) in health and social care research continues to expand, ensuring that patients, service users, carers, and family members are active in the shaping of research that may have a direct impact on them. As part of the National Institute for Health and Social Care’s mission to improve national health outcomes, PPIE is a key commitment of researchers and teams, striving to give individuals affected a voice.
The PPIE Summer School 2025: Building Partnerships through Creativity and Justice, originally launched as a collaboration between our dedicated Patient and Public Engagement Group (PenPEG), NIHR Biomedical Research Group and the University of Exeter, is being led by Dr. Kristin Liabo. This engaging programme is designed for researchers, PhD students and PPIE coordinators who want to a deeper level of meaningful patient and public involvement into their work.
Now in its third year, the summer school aims to go beyond numbers and rhetoric, embedding innovative, honest and constructive ways to share and generate knowledge, while building impactful relationships. As part of the offering this year, attendees will have the opportunity to attend an in-person, interactive 3 days in Exeter from 2nd-4th July 2025.
By bringing together leading researchers in the area and knowledgeable public contributors, the summer school offers attendees a unique opportunity to explore fresh perspectives and new approaches to knowledge-sharing and engagement, reinforcing the increasingly vital role that the public play in shaping the future of health and care research.
Dr Kristin Liabo says:
“To understand the world through research, we need to work with the world and people in it, not treat it as separate to us. We look forward to days of sharing and co-creating further knowledge on positive engagement, first online at the introductory day and then in person in Exeter. Our hope is that people will leave feeling inspired and ready to do more, and more creative, engaged research.”
PPIE In-person 3-day Summer School, Exeter, 2nd-4th July 2025
This unique interdisciplinary course is relevant to people undertaking health or care research, including PhD students and those in PPIE co-ordinator/facilitator roles. It is also relevant to people who are not currently involving members of the public in their work but would like to do so. Linking research and practice, the course is tailored to those who are working across different disciplines in medicine, health and social care, and public health.
This course is an opportunity to explore beyond the numbers and the rhetoric of PPIE. We will examine innovative and honest ways of generating and spreading knowledge. We will also explore how to foster the uptake of this knowledge through partnerships with care sectors, the public and communities – partnerships that reflect creativity and justice.
