In 2021 the National Institute for Health Research Applied Research Collaborations (NIHR ARCs) were awarded £13.125 million to develop key research programmes to address the most pressing issues facing health and social care today.
As part of this national programme, we are leading the Children’s Health and Maternity Programme in collaboration with the national ARC network. By building on our world-leading expertise and local and national networks we have been helping to find effective ways to implement evidence-based interventions to improve children’s and maternity services across England.
Using evidence to change child health and maternity services
Following on from the success of our national networking event in December 2022, we’re delighted to invite you to attend and contribute to our second cross-ARC Child Health and Maternity Services Implementation networking event.
The event will offer the chance to find like-minded people to work with to increase the impact of your work. We would encourage researchers, public collaborators, practitioners, policy makers, service commissioners and those implementing services to book a place and come along to share your work and experience.

Hear from the project teams
There will be an opportunity to hear an update from the project teams supporting and researching the implementation of the four projects prioritised as part of the evidence-based child health and maternity programme.
The four projects are:
- ESMI-III: The Effectiveness and Implementation of Maternal Mental Health Services
- BRUSH (optimising toothBrushing pRogrammes in nUrseries and ScHools)
- Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for children in care
- Evaluating models of health-based mateRnIty Violence Advisor (RIVA) provision in maternity services
In the morning the teams will present their learning and consider how others can get involved in spreading good practice in their own regions and localities. You can also hear about the patient and public involvement and engagement activity at the core of our programme.
In the afternoon, we’d like to hear from you! There will be two individually themed sessions focussing on child health and maternity services.
Can I present?
We invite you to submit brief abstracts to share a 10-minute talk with other participants focused on “sharing implementation experiences, challenges, and learning” in your own area, topic or service. Four talks will be selected for each workshop including one for an early career researcher. Each session will have time for wider discussion and questions.
We’re hoping these sessions will provide an opportunity for wide conversations about how to improve the implementation and spread of evidence-based interventions in Children’s Health and Maternity services. We also hope that this will be a chance for networking and the development of plans for future projects.
How do I apply for a presentation slot?
You can submit an expression of interest to present when you book your place.
How much does it cost?
There is no charge for attendance and there will be refreshments and lunch available. Bursaries are available for travel expenses for early career researchers and public collaborators who are invited to present.
